About door locks
What are smart locks?
Smart locks add wireless connectivity and electronic actuation to a door lock. Instead of (or alongside) a key, you can unlock with a phone, a fingerprint, a PIN, an NFC tag, or remotely from anywhere. They're useful for everyday convenience, but the bigger payoff is automation: a smart lock can trigger your lighting, alarm, and thermostat scenes the moment you walk through the door.
Common types are retrofit locks that mount on top of your existing deadbolt or Euro cylinder (August, Aqara, Nuki, Tedee), full-replacement smart deadbolts (Yale Linus, Schlage Encode), and smart padlocks for sheds, gates and lockers. Most include a physical key as a fallback. The best ones also have a numeric keypad so guests don't need to install an app.
Which protocols do smart locks use?
Smart locks typically run on Bluetooth (always, for in-range commissioning), plus one of Zigbee, Z-Wave, Matter-over-Thread or Wi-Fi for remote access. Z-Wave dominates US locks (Schlage, Yale Assure). Zigbee and Matter are common in Europe (Aqara, Nuki, Tedee, Yale Linus).
For battery life, prefer Z-Wave or Thread. Wi-Fi smart locks need a recharge every few months, while a Thread or Z-Wave lock typically runs 6–12 months on a set of AA batteries. If you want it to work with Apple Home and Google Home and Alexa without buying multiple bridges, pick a Matter-over-Thread lock.

Frequently asked questions
Are smart locks safe to install on a front door?
A reputable smart lock from August, Yale, Aqara, Schlage or Eufy is at least as secure as a quality mechanical deadbolt. The lock body is the same; the smart part just adds remote control. Avoid no-name locks with hardcoded admin codes or unencrypted cloud APIs, and always pick a lock with a physical key override or backup keypad.
Do smart locks work without internet?
Most lock physically and via Bluetooth even when the internet is out. Remote access (open from your phone while away) and voice control require a working hub or bridge. Battery-powered locks typically warn you weeks before going flat.
Will a smart lock fit my existing door?
Many fit on top of an existing deadbolt or Euro cylinder without replacing it (August, Aqara, Nuki). Full-replacement locks (Yale Linus, Schlage Encode) need a compatible door bore and hole spacing. Measure twice: UK Euro cylinders, US deadbolts and Scandinavian mortice locks are all different standards.
Can I unlock a Matter smart lock from Apple, Google and Alexa at the same time?
Yes. Matter 1.2+ supports locks across all three ecosystems, and you can pair a single lock to all of them. For maximum reliability, pair the lock to a Thread border router rather than relying purely on Bluetooth.
