What is Zigbee?

Zigbee is a low-power wireless communication protocol designed for smart home and IoT devices. It's used by products from Philips Hue, Aqara, IKEA TRÅDFRI, Sonoff, and hundreds of other manufacturers.

Zigbee operates on the 2.4 GHz frequency band and uses a mesh network architecture, meaning devices relay messages through each other. That extends range and improves reliability across your home.

How Does Zigbee Work?

A Zigbee network has three types of devices:

  • Coordinator: The hub that manages the network (e.g. a Philips Hue Bridge or a USB stick running Zigbee2MQTT)
  • Routers: Mains-powered devices that relay messages (e.g. smart bulbs, plugs)
  • End devices: Battery-powered sensors that only transmit when needed (e.g. door sensors, motion sensors)

Battery-powered end devices sleep most of the time, which is why Zigbee sensors can run for a year or more on a single AA battery.

Do I Need a Hub for Zigbee?

Yes. Zigbee devices require a coordinator (hub) to work. Common options:

  • Philips Hue Bridge: Works only with Hue devices
  • Amazon Echo (4th gen): Built-in Zigbee hub, works with many brands
  • Zigbee2MQTT + USB stick: Open-source, works with nearly every Zigbee device, the best choice for Home Assistant users
  • Home Assistant's Zigbee Home Automation (ZHA): Built-in Zigbee integration for Home Assistant

Getting Started with Zigbee

  1. Choose your coordinator: For maximum device compatibility, a USB Zigbee stick (e.g. Sonoff Zigbee 3.0 USB Dongle Plus) with Zigbee2MQTT or ZHA is recommended
  2. Install Zigbee2MQTT or ZHA: Both integrate directly with Home Assistant
  3. Pair your first device: Put the device into pairing mode and let the coordinator discover it
  4. Build your mesh: Add mains-powered devices (smart plugs, bulbs) to extend range before adding battery sensors at the edges of your home

Tip: Avoid mixing Philips Hue bulbs in a general Zigbee network. Hue bulbs can behave as poor routers and cause instability. Keep Hue on its own bridge or use non-Hue bulbs in your Zigbee2MQTT network.
