What is Thread? The Low-Power Smart Home Network Protocol

Thread is the low-power mesh networking protocol used by Matter devices. Learn how it works, what a border router is, and why it matters for your smart home.

What is Thread?

Thread is a low-power, IPv6-based mesh networking protocol designed for battery-powered smart home devices. It was developed by Google, Apple, Samsung, and others as the wireless transport layer for Matter devices that can't use Wi-Fi.

If Matter is the language smart home devices use to talk to each other, Thread is the radio network they use to carry those conversations, at least for sensors, locks, and other battery-powered devices.

How Does Thread Work?

Thread creates a self-healing mesh network where devices relay messages through each other to reach a border router, a device that connects the Thread mesh to your regular IP network.

Key characteristics:

  • Low power: Ideal for battery-powered devices that need to last years
  • Self-healing mesh: If one device loses power, the network routes around it automatically
  • IPv6 native: Every Thread device gets a proper IP address
  • No proprietary hub: Any Thread border router works with any Thread device (when using Matter)

What is a Thread Border Router?

A Thread border router bridges the Thread mesh network to your home's IP network (and on to the internet or your smart home hub). Common border routers include:

  • Apple HomePod / HomePod mini (running iOS 16.2+)
  • Apple TV 4K (3rd gen)
  • Google Nest Hub (2nd gen) and Nest Hub Max
  • Amazon Echo (4th gen)
  • Home Assistant's Yellow (with built-in Thread radio)

You only need one or two border routers. Thread devices will join the mesh automatically.

Getting Started with Thread

Thread is largely automatic if you use Matter-certified battery devices:

  1. Ensure you have a border router: A HomePod mini, Apple TV 4K, or recent Google Nest Hub will do
  2. Buy a Thread + Matter device: Look for devices with both logos (e.g. Aqara sensors, Eve accessories)
  3. Pair via your platform: Use the Matter QR code in your app of choice. Thread network joining happens automatically
  4. Add more devices: Each new Thread device strengthens the mesh

Tip: You don't need to manage Thread manually. It's designed to be invisible. Just make sure you have at least one border router in your home and Matter will handle the rest.
