How Amazon Alexa compatibility works

Amazon Alexa is the voice service that powers Echo speakers, Echo Show displays, Fire TV devices and a long list of third-party Alexa-built-in products. Smart home devices added to Alexa can be controlled by voice or through the Alexa app (Android, iOS, web), or used as triggers and actions in Routines.

Alexa pairs with smart home devices in three different ways. The simplest is Matter: any 4th-generation Echo or newer Echo Show can act as a Matter controller, and Matter devices appear in the Alexa app immediately after pairing, no skill required. The second is the long-running Alexa skill system, where vendors publish a "Works with Alexa" skill that you enable in the Alexa app and link to your manufacturer account.

The third option is unique to Alexa: select Echo devices have a built-in Zigbee hub. The 4th-generation Echo, Echo Show 10 (3rd gen), Echo Plus (1st and 2nd gen) and Echo Show (2nd gen) can pair Zigbee bulbs, plugs and sensors directly without a separate bridge. They are the only mainstream voice assistants with native Zigbee support.

For Z-Wave, Alexa relies on a bridge, typically Home Assistant with the Alexa Smart Home integration, or a vendor hub like SmartThings. Echo hardware does not contain a Z-Wave radio.

Frequently asked questions

What devices work with Amazon Alexa?

Alexa works with thousands of smart home devices via three routes: Matter (on supported Echo hubs), the Works with Alexa skill catalogue, and direct Zigbee pairing on Echo devices that have a built-in Zigbee hub. Lights, plugs, switches, thermostats, locks, cameras, doorbells, sensors, blinds and TVs are all well covered. Devices on this page are confirmed to integrate by at least one of those three routes.

Do all Echo devices support Matter?

No. Only newer Echo devices act as Matter controllers. The 4th-generation Echo, Echo Show 8 (2nd gen and later), Echo Show 10 (3rd gen), Echo Show 15, Echo Studio and recent Echo Hub all support Matter. Older Echo Dot and Echo Plus generations do not. Thread-based Matter devices additionally need an Echo with a Thread Border Router (Echo 4th gen, Echo Hub).

How do I add a smart home device to Alexa?

Open the Alexa app, tap More → Add Device. For Matter devices, pick "Other", then "Matter" and scan the QR code or enter the setup code. For skill-based devices, pick the manufacturer name from the list and link your account. For Zigbee devices on a Zigbee-enabled Echo, just say "Alexa, discover devices" and it will scan and pair them.

What's the difference between an Alexa skill and Matter?

An Alexa skill is a cloud-to-cloud integration: your device talks to the manufacturer's cloud, which talks to Amazon's cloud, which talks to your Echo. It works for almost anything but adds latency and depends on the manufacturer's servers staying online. Matter is local. Certified Matter devices talk directly to your Echo over your home network, so commands are faster and survive a manufacturer's cloud going offline.

Can Alexa control Zigbee or Z-Wave devices?

Zigbee, yes, directly on Echo devices that have a built-in Zigbee hub (Echo 4th gen, Echo Show 10 3rd gen, Echo Plus, Echo Show 2nd gen). Z-Wave, no, not directly. You need a bridge such as SmartThings, Home Assistant, or a vendor hub. The bridge then exposes the Z-Wave devices to Alexa as standard Alexa-compatible smart home devices.
