Most Zigbee devices work, but compatibility depends on whether the device is in the Zigbee2MQTT or ZHA quirks database. A device using only standard Zigbee clusters will typically work out of the box. Vendor-specific behaviour may require a custom converter. Yes. Home Assistant has a built-in Matter integration that pairs Matter-certified devices directly over the local network, no cloud account required. A Matter controller (typically the Home Assistant server itself with the Matter Server add-on) and a Thread Border Router are recommended for Thread-based Matter devices.

Home Assistant itself runs on a Raspberry Pi, NUC, virtual machine, or Home Assistant Yellow / Green hardware. For Zigbee devices you also need a Zigbee coordinator (such as the Home Assistant SkyConnect or a Sonoff dongle). For Z-Wave you need a Z-Wave controller. Wi-Fi and Matter-over-Wi-Fi devices don't need any extra radio.
