Home Assistant talks to smart home devices through integrations. These are small adapters that translate between Home Assistant's internal model and a vendor's API or protocol. Some integrations ship with Home Assistant itself. Others come from the community via HACS (Home Assistant Community Store).
For devices on the open standards (Zigbee, Z-Wave and Matter) Home Assistant doesn't need a vendor-specific integration at all. It just needs a coordinator (a USB radio for Zigbee or Z-Wave) and the appropriate built-in integration. That's why this list is built mainly from the Zigbee2MQTT, Z-Wave JS and Matter DCL databases. Those are the authoritative sources of "this device is known to work."
For Wi-Fi devices, support varies brand by brand. Many work locally via custom firmware (Tasmota, ESPHome) or community integrations. Others require the vendor's cloud, which works but is less reliable than a local protocol. If you want the smoothest Home Assistant experience out of the box, prefer Matter, Zigbee or Z-Wave devices.

Frequently asked questions
What devices work with Home Assistant?
Home Assistant supports thousands of smart home devices through native integrations, community add-ons, and the standardized Matter, Zigbee, and Z-Wave protocols. The list on this page is built from the Zigbee2MQTT and Z-Wave JS device databases plus the Matter Distributed Compliance Ledger. Together that covers the vast majority of devices a Home Assistant user is likely to consider.
Do all Zigbee devices work with Home Assistant?
Most Zigbee devices work, but compatibility depends on whether the device is in the Zigbee2MQTT or ZHA quirks database. A device using only standard Zigbee clusters will typically work out of the box. Vendor-specific behaviour may require a custom converter. Devices on this page are confirmed to be in the Zigbee2MQTT supported-devices list.
Does Home Assistant support Matter?
Yes. Home Assistant has a built-in Matter integration that pairs Matter-certified devices directly over the local network, no cloud account required. A Matter controller (typically the Home Assistant server itself with the Matter Server add-on) and a Thread Border Router are recommended for Thread-based Matter devices.
Do I need a hub or coordinator for Home Assistant?
Home Assistant itself runs on a Raspberry Pi, NUC, virtual machine, or Home Assistant Yellow / Green hardware. For Zigbee devices you also need a Zigbee coordinator (such as the Home Assistant SkyConnect or a Sonoff dongle). For Z-Wave you need a Z-Wave controller. Wi-Fi and Matter-over-Wi-Fi devices don't need any extra radio.
Is Home Assistant free?
Yes, Home Assistant is free and open-source. You only pay for the hardware to run it on and any optional Nabu Casa cloud subscription if you want easy remote access and Google/Alexa voice integration without configuring a reverse proxy yourself.
