Smart Switches
Replace wall switches with app-controlled, automatable versions that keep your dumb bulbs intact.
About switches
What are smart switches?
Smart switches are mains-wired wall switches that replace your existing on/off or dimmer switches and add network connectivity. Unlike smart bulbs, they leave your existing fixtures and bulbs intact. That is useful when you have specialty bulbs, recessed lighting, or simply don't want to replace a dozen perfectly good bulbs.
A smart switch can be operated physically (the paddle still works), through an app, by voice, or by automation. Many models also act as scene controllers: a long press fires a "Goodnight" scene, a double-tap sets the lights to 50%. Battery-powered wireless smart buttons are a no-wiring alternative that achieve the same automation goals without touching mains.
Which protocols do smart switches use?
Wall-mounted smart switches typically run on Zigbee (Aqara, Sonoff, Tuya), Z-Wave (Inovelli, Zooz, GE Enbrighten), Matter (newer Aqara, EVE, Leviton), or Wi-Fi (Shelly, Sonoff with Wi-Fi firmware, TP-Link Kasa).
Z-Wave switches dominate in North America thanks to extensive UL-listed lineups. Zigbee is more common in Europe and Asia. Matter is rapidly catching up. If you want one switch that works in Apple Home, Google Home and Alexa without a hub-specific app, Matter is the answer.

Frequently asked questions
Do smart switches need a neutral wire?
Most do. Without a neutral, the switch can't power its own radio when the load is off. Some Aqara, Inovelli and Lutron switches work with no-neutral wiring, but they're often limited to incandescent or specific dimmable LED loads. Always check the manufacturer's compatibility list before buying.
Can I use smart switches with smart bulbs?
It works but isn't ideal. When the switch cuts power, the bulbs go offline. A better setup is a smart switch with "smart bulb mode" (it sends a wireless command instead of cutting power), or a battery-powered scene controller that doesn't sit in the load path.
What is the difference between a relay and a dimmer?
A relay is a simple on/off switch, best for pendants, fans and any non-dimmable load. A dimmer adjusts brightness and is the right choice for incandescent, halogen, or dimmable LED bulbs. Buying a dimmer for a non-dimmable load can damage the load.
Are battery-powered smart buttons easier than wired switches?
For renters or anyone who doesn't want to touch mains wiring, yes. Devices like Aqara Wireless Mini Switch, Hue Dimmer or Flic stick to the wall, run on a coin cell, and trigger any automation. They don't actually break the circuit. They just send commands to whatever you've configured.
