What is Homey? A Beginner's Guide

What is Homey?

Homey is a smart home platform made by Athom, a Dutch company. It combines a physical hub (Homey Pro) and a cloud-based app (Homey Cloud) that let you connect devices from hundreds of different brands in one place, with one app.

Unlike Google Home or Amazon Alexa, Homey supports a wide range of wireless protocols directly: Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, infrared, and more. You don't need separate hubs for each protocol.

How Does Homey Work?

Homey's device support is app-based. Manufacturers and community developers publish apps in the Homey App Store. When you install an app (for example the IKEA TRÅDFRI app) Homey gains the ability to pair and control those devices.

This means compatibility depends on whether a Homey app exists for your device. Most popular brands have apps, and new ones are added regularly by both official developers and the community.

Note: The compatibility data on this site is sourced from open-source Homey apps on GitHub and may not cover every model from a brand.

Most serious smart home users choose Homey Pro for its local control and broad protocol support.

What Can You Do With Homey?

  • Unified control: Manage devices from hundreds of brands in one app
  • Flows: Create powerful automations combining any device with any trigger
  • Widgets: Control devices directly from your phone's home screen
  • Works offline: Homey Pro automations keep running when your internet is down
  • Voice control: Works with Siri, Google Assistant, and Amazon Alexa

Getting Started with Homey

  1. Choose your version: Homey Pro (physical hub) or Homey Cloud (app only)
  2. Download the Homey app on iOS or Android
  3. Add your devices: Search the Homey App Store for your brand, install the app, and pair your devices
  4. Create a Flow: Use the visual Flow editor to set up automations, e.g. "When motion is detected → turn on lights"

Tip: Start with the Homey Community Forum (community.homey.app). It's active and full of ready-made Flow examples.
