What is Homey?
Homey is a smart home platform made by Athom, a Dutch company. It combines a physical hub (Homey Pro) and a cloud-based app (Homey Cloud) that let you connect devices from hundreds of different brands in one place, with one app.
Unlike Google Home or Amazon Alexa, Homey supports a wide range of wireless protocols directly: Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, infrared, and more. You don't need separate hubs for each protocol.
How Does Homey Work?
Homey's device support is app-based. Manufacturers and community developers publish apps in the Homey App Store. When you install an app (for example the IKEA TRÅDFRI app) Homey gains the ability to pair and control those devices.
This means compatibility depends on whether a Homey app exists for your device. Most popular brands have apps, and new ones are added regularly by both official developers and the community.
Note: The compatibility data on this site is sourced from open-source Homey apps on GitHub and may not cover every model from a brand.
Homey Pro vs Homey Cloud
| Homey Pro | Homey Cloud | |
|---|---|---|
| Hardware | Physical hub (€399) | No hub needed |
| Zigbee & Z-Wave | ✓ Built-in radios | ✗ Wi-Fi & cloud only |
| Local control | ✓ Works without internet | ✗ Cloud-dependent |
| App support | Full | Limited |
Most serious smart home users choose Homey Pro for its local control and broad protocol support.
