Do I Need a Hub for My Smart Home?

Whether you need a smart home hub depends on which devices and protocols you want to use. This guide explains when you need a hub and when you don't.

What Is a Smart Home Hub?

A smart home hub is a central device that communicates with your smart home accessories and coordinates them. It acts as a translator between different wireless protocols (like Zigbee or Z-Wave) and your home network (Wi-Fi).

Whether you need a hub depends entirely on which devices and protocols you want to use.

When You Don't Need a Hub

Wi-Fi and Matter devices connect directly to your router. No hub required.

  • Wi-Fi smart plugs (e.g. TP-Link Kasa, Shelly)
  • Wi-Fi smart bulbs (e.g. LIFX, some Nanoleaf)
  • Matter over Wi-Fi devices (e.g. newer Eve, Aqara M3 hub not required)

These devices connect like any other gadget on your network. The trade-off: Wi-Fi devices consume more power (fine for plugs, less ideal for sensors) and can congest your Wi-Fi network if you have many of them.

When You Do Need a Hub

Zigbee, Z-Wave, and Thread devices use their own radio frequencies and cannot connect directly to your Wi-Fi router. They need a coordinator or controller:

ProtocolHub / Coordinator needed
ZigbeeZigbee coordinator (e.g. USB stick + Zigbee2MQTT, Hue Bridge, Echo 4th gen)
Z-WaveZ-Wave controller (e.g. Aeotec Z-Stick, Hubitat, SmartThings)
ThreadThread border router (e.g. HomePod mini, Apple TV 4K, Nest Hub 2nd gen)

Which Hub Should I Get?

If you're starting fresh and want the widest compatibility: → A USB Zigbee dongle (e.g. Sonoff Zigbee 3.0 Dongle Plus) + Home Assistant. This gives you access to nearly every Zigbee device on the market.

If you want plug-and-play without a local server: → Amazon Echo 4th gen (has built-in Zigbee) for Zigbee devices, or go all-in on Matter/Wi-Fi devices.

If you're in the Apple ecosystem: → A HomePod mini serves as both a HomeKit hub and a Thread border router.

If you're invested in Z-Wave: → A Zooz Z-Box or Aeotec Z-Stick 7 with Home Assistant.

The Honest Answer

For a small setup with a handful of Wi-Fi or Matter devices: no hub needed.

For a larger setup with Zigbee sensors, battery-powered devices, and complex automations: yes, a hub (or Home Assistant) will make your life much easier, and give you far more control over your devices.
